The whole world is on that balance, so part of what we haven't really talked about much is our culture here. It's kind of like the joy of, like I said, I was a rough athlete compared to the Olympian and All-Star I'm talking to. Peter: John, the best. It's like it really is part of your life. How do we change the model, and really put new metrics out there, for us to get it? But it was so much fun. Its not really in a place where I could tell you, like, hey, heres our growth potential. Michael Red: The family, I know, that's big for you in that culture and what you try to create as a culture is family. Jan 16th, 2016 by Mayor Tom Barrett. It was one of these terrible times where, when youre in pro sport, you book all your revenue, you do all your dirty business before tip-off and if they didnt have somebody to run the business in July, it wouldve been a disaster and they were stuck with me and thats my road to success. Thats. Search So, we stopped having basketball games and we stopped having concerts and we stopped. And I obviously was kind of like I call myself the Division 3 dream. It would be fun to own a hundred McDonalds franchises and you guys would be great at that. And 24 hours later, I think I called them from the Pfister Hotel and said like, "Oh, yeah. Feigin can do all the PR he wants, but the most effective pitch to get fans into the new arena is out of his hands. John: Hey, Peter. You build this infrastructure and skill set that is geared toward a championship. He trusts you to run a business and he also ethically says Dont do anything you wouldnt want on the front page of a newspaper the next day, and he means it. So first of all, the bubble was kind of like so exciting, surreal, and awesome. It was just such a big deal. Talk about the steps leading up to pulling off, living the dream, actually winning the championship. Peter Feigin: Michael, like I said, anytime, anywhere. Its like you think about what the culture of community is. And I think we find it like it's a responsibility where we can set the example and we can innovate and then we can shout it from the mountaintops. So, of course, he's just had enough. His friends, while the games are suspended, are trying to stay as prepared as possible. I think one of the big skills is, I definitely do not know the answer to everything and if youre able to Basically I do think I can solve anything. Talk a bit about how to do that without bruising anyones ego and keeping everybody happy. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God. Michael Red: If you had to go back to your 16-year-old self, what advice would you give your 16-year-old self? Can you keep a competitive championship-caliber team across an era? Do you want to be in a place where people are having fun and were trying to get rid of all the toxic. Peter Feigin: These are all massive, huge, systematic problems for generations that we've got to chip away from every day. (There are perks to being commissioner.) Kind of surreal. We've made it really authentic and localized with what our food and beverage offerings are going to be. And there is no magic wand that kind of changes this in six months. But if Woodhouse had any qualms about digging in on defense against various titans of industry, he quickly learned that everyone was competitive. They were trying to think of something that would be like. I said, oh, its so good to get all your support. Peter Feigin: Khris Middleton, as you can imagine, nobody understands that players have been having to get COVID tested twice a day and you got to come into our training center and we have parking spaces. The people part is always tough. Like Jeff Eisenband on Facebook. None could have anticipated how it would grow over the years, or the motley crew of characters who would be drawn to it. Talk about the journey to the Bucks and how did that happen and then why Milwaukee? Peter: Yeah, it was incredible. And how did that all come about? And the Milwaukee Bucks players were the catalyst for that to happen in a big way. Michael Red: I got my sources. I'm so proud for his development. Thats what we call our volunteering. How do we affect the community together? So, that part of it was awesome. So, how do we figure out and reorganize on the senior leadership pattern. People can find it at, I saw the website, it was Cluckery, cluckery.com, right? Thats and like you said, you get to share that with all the hundreds of other rings. How do we build the baselines? Peter Feigin has been the President of the Milwaukee Bucks since October 2014. This was the Milwaukee Bucks at the time had lost the most games in the NBA, had the least revenue, had the least season ticket holders, any metric you could measure. I'm just honored and grateful that you took the time to be on the cast today, man. That's right. And again, it's kind of the relationship. There's no business." We deal, and weve had some meetings with our friends at the Badgers of the University of Wisconsin as they create a collective, weve certainly been tracking kind of whats going on. Whos got next? Lee said. I would say again, from our owners, from day one, they understood that from how are we stewards of the brand of the Bucks and how are we examples in the community? I think, listen, you could certainly have success with superpower and great skill and everything, but to have peopleYou mentioned at the beginning of the show, how in a small market, do you keep consistency? And like, "Hey, you got to hear my idea," or something. Before we started this interview, you took a little break and said, John excuse me for a second because someone very special stopped by. Talk a little bit about the ice cream truck, the ice cream man. How do we make this more than equal?" Feigin got the funding approved in the next couple months, and the Bucks signed a 30-year lease to stay in Milwaukee. I think that was a necessity. We were in this really awesome mode of, oh, this is a startup, like this is a startup. You got to think about what the objective is, but I truly do believe, just no is not an answer if you surround yourself with smart people. How do you balance a world and a sports world, especially, thats become so excited about, what Billy Beane created in terms of data analytics and the importance of numbers with the human capital element. Peter: Yeah. But I think, if you sprinkle in the effort and the care, it affects change. Peter: You got it running the 70s, 80s and 90s, yep. He wanted to keep the team, which was a big catalyst for the whole movement.". Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's part of the culture and kind of down from ownership, like you're going to stand for something or you're going to stand for nothing. I think one of the things Jason of Beverly Hills, who was the designer and the manufacturer did, we just had this awesome element that the top of the ring came off and became a pendant on your, that you could actually wear as a necklace. Anyone can read what you share. "Now we have to monitor and figure out and organize the groups that travel from Greece to away games and organize the meet-and-greets after the game, which by the way, aren't scheduled. And we'll get into the twin in a little bit. Peter Feigin: That's an interesting statement. And we want to attract people who want to be in that mode. Im not a big fan of, hey, we need to make money or consult off that. The Run also often doubles as a day care. Its incredible and not many people get to do it, lets be honest, when you get to actually live your dream and go to the top. What advice can you share backwards to the young people out there that want to live your journey or something close to it? Which is a huge opportunity. I think thats like fair. That is an interesting statement. Michael Red: Giannis Antetokounmpo and that team is so special to watch. Peter Feigin: They're like, "Peter, don't double think anything. This is learning on the job, right? And our expectations are to consistently improve and grow as a business and consistently improve on the court and vie for a championship. Peter Feigin: Yeah. My mother was one of the preeminent ad executives from Grey Advertising for 40 years. The first game goes to 9 points, and every game after that goes to 7. Here in a million person city and your ability to affect change, your platform, your ability to really make a difference is so incredible. Its rotating cast includes bankers, lawyers and high-powered television executives. The arena is Feigin's baby, and he's almost ready to show it off, as doors will open next season. It's hard to build trust here and it's provincial. Because I don't think we're really worried about kind of like we would think half a million people are going to die, that what would happen to hospitals and ICUs and things like that. Here's your Hispanics." What you do is you submarine the entire process into yourself. Peter: heres the market. Being able to play ball with your son is kind of like the best of the best, Peter Feigin said. There's always joking, a lot of joking and the team, the organization from what I've heard and know of you is that they really, really, really appreciate your leadership within the organization. John: You grew up on the Upper East Side, you are a native New Yorker, your brothers still back there. And they were kind of stuck at the last minute deep in the summer. We spend a lot of our time really trying to figure out what are the levers to move the revenue. We've developed about 75% of it and people are living here, working here, and playing. Peter: Well, its having like Ive always said, people talk about their personal board of directors and what that is and I had the advantage and still have the advantage of my mother being the best consultant you could possibly have. Michael Red: Were you always a risk taker or was that cultivated in your household or where did that risk taking ability come from? Weve got Peter Feigin. But youve not only lived the dream but also climb to the mountain and very few win a championship. In a 10 year phase, I started with a startup with Marquis Jet, with Kenny Dichter and Jesse Itzler who started the business and came from sports. Everybody at ball was just, you got to move, go leave now. I mean, nobody understands like players have a handful of days off the entire season. We can expose it as like, "Here, we're the example in Milwaukee." Peter Feigin: No. Michael Red: The podcast, as you know, is all about betting on yourself and talk about what that means to you, Peter, like betting on yourself. I guarantee you'll find motivation and guidance from this remarkable man. He's bigger, Giannis is even outside of the country than he is inside of it. My fantasy, I had two fantasies growing up. I volunteered/got myself pushed into the reset committee of the bubble committee on the NBA to do something that's never been done before. Thomas F. Leonard . How could we reduce our costs immediately knowing that we weren't operating? But I'm sure [inaudible 00:30:10] the players in that process. That's not a "here we got to the finish line." I thought Id hit the jackpot, Feigin said. You got to be someone that actually that enjoys being here and part of the family culture and part of an organization. How we build our brand and how we build our awareness and likability around that, it's just kind of one of those no-brainers, too. But you would say I kind of got to play through high school college with just grit and will and really like persistence and relentlessness. Ive got the keys to a gym.. And you do it, for us, kind of my job was to be that rock and support and think about if you told me that 50% of my time would be spent on making sure everybody is okay. John: You talked about your Masters of the Universe being your partners and owners and really some of the brightest people on this planet which of course, thats true. If Im 25 and struggling to get up and down the court because I was out with my friends, and these guys who are running companies are showing up and playing ball, then I have no excuse. Peter Feigin: So, my job is pretty simple, like how do I build the trust with them? If you've been that lucky and you've been that blessed then you've got to share. The entity at the center of the controversy the Milwaukee Bucks didn't waste time jumping in. Theres some other attributes, but just take those three is like your best, which, whether youre on basketball or the business side, you die for. You talked about the head of human capital, and obviously Im proud to say, and Im only saying this with love, youre a native New Yorker like I am and were people, people. All of a sudden, 12 months ago, that went upside down, and with Giannis, it literally went international, national, regional, local, which is a great turnaround for us.". And I believe in my heart that the Bucks were real leaders in that moment. How big a deal it is to renovate downtown, and how big we can become and what a billboard the Milwaukee Bucks should be for Wisconsin around the world. So, that was my one get back to kind of surprise him because I think there were a few spies that were taking pictures of every time I parked in that spot for a second. So, it's a little bit kind of nuts and delusional to go through thinking like you can kind of accomplish or solve or get anything done, but it's kind of the way I've kind of attacked life in a big way. So, I don't think uncommon to probably everybody and certainly every leader, everybody who has a real responsibility, the last 12 months were like nothing we could have ever imagined, we could have ever thought about and really reacted to. So, we see this great opportunity to lead by example and then to almost market and promote it as this should be more the norm than not the norm in a big way. Like the Kees, you're going to hopefully be doing something you love with people you love and working your butt off, but there are expectations. Social media has created an avenue to spread the Bucks' brand beyond Milwaukee and the United States. And I think the balance is really, really tough because you know what an NBA season is. I've known Jon for, I don't know, 13, 14 years, and to see what he's done with the team as the general manager has been really impressive. By form, I think your strength of your network is as strong and as smart as you can possibly be. I became the president of the company for a number of years, and then we got absorbed by NetJets and took on that role at NetJets for a couple of years, and really learned incredibly, had this opportunity to learn P&L and operational. I think to be successful here and take it from a very fast talking, sometimes lazy speaking New Yorker, who swears too much and does everything. John: That is a big deal. Talk about that relationship that you have with the players. "I did kind of the 'Dick Cheney.' John: Thats awesome. Please remember if youre going through Wisconsin, go and have some chicken tenders at the Cluckery. Michael Red: Wow. Weve had Giannis invest in the brewers, which is like. And I think it was like a checkpoint for us certainly, but for the whole country on like, "Boy, this is one of those inflection points that we've got to make matter in a big way." So, just being a part of that, I mean, I know it sounds crazy. And they all live kind of the job we all live kind of each other's lives. Feigin, 50, calls his game the Saturday Morning Run popularly known among its members as The Run or S.M.R. and he has a massive collection of T-shirts to prove it. It became such a healthy place to be.. Nobody ever thought it would be a year shutdown, but our owners are kind of incredible people, who want to see a plan, who want to see a recommendation and want to go forward. Let me just throw this out there. Talk about that. The ring features plenty of subtle and not so subtle Bucks symbolism. But the Bucks' toughest hit came off the court. It's the same way she'll listen through what I'm going through. How do we sit here and I think like, how could the Millwaukee Bucks not be, not Americas team, but Globals team. In his senior season, he was named the team captain, along with his twin brother Daniel, and was named the team's most improved player. You didnt study sports. And I knew who Arthur Ashe was, but I wasn't a big tennis guy and my job was basically being Arthur Ashe's right hand person through. How did that come together? It keeps on changing, but we've got to be able to pivot and understand when we're out of balance. We have the DNA and the strength and this caliber of championship caliber team to really be attractive to the world. I mean, the fact that players had just had it is no surprise. Now just, we've talked about your background. "As we got further along, one of my jobs was to staff up that operation and have a business plan," Feigin remembers. "That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God.. I don't know how to talk about that other than like my dad was like my hero and he was selfless and kind of quietly just did anything for anybody and kind of was like that's how I had value for him. If my guys in high school or college gave me the finger as the point back on the assists from a backdoor or something, I think I got more of a thrill out of that than I got out of scoring points. Going back into the past is something I wanted to ask you about. Peter: The same he is, everywhere else. This is COVID, how do we do it? And he has represented at the highest level. Peter: How do we envision the next day? As Feigin hones the Bucks' in-arena and digital strategy, The Giannis Effect is the guide. Do we want this guy to keep playing? Peter Feigin: I'm not a good example of life balance, because I kind of blend them in such a big way that my kids, my brothers, my mother, my wife, they're all a part of it. In business it takes a real challenging of like where your growth is going to come from I in a big way. We closed our restaurants down. John: Right. How does that, and then, with that also because this harkens back, Im old enough, youre old enough even, we remember the Michael Jordan era, he was the greatest player in the world back in his Again, you not only have one of the greatest players ever to play on the planet, but youve also created this culture of retention. When he called Milwaukee "the most segregated, racist place I've ever experience in my life" in 2016, Feigin was just being a straight shooter intent on improving the neighborhood. And lo and behold, kind of five, six years later, we've kind of accelerated it. There was a collective effort on you guys to really, really embrace the city. Well, that's you. If you lose, that might mean you need to keep an eye on several of your friends toddlers. Were you looking at other franchises that have done this before, or were you looking at other business models and merging some version thereof? Peter: But one of the incredible things, alignment we have with myself, John Horst, whos our GM and coach Bud is like, weve got this undercurrent of constant improvement and kind of like never, pleased but never satisfied. The Bucks are one of the 17 teams that is competing in the new NBA 2K League, a necessary decision in Feigin's mind. I never wanted to be that guy with the goggles and the knee brace and the tucked-in shirt being like, Hey! Incredibly these three guys were literally engaged. Its hundreds of rings. The one thing about you that I've seen over the years is that you keep the culture in a funny mood, right? My wife and I have known each other since high school. "Very simply, we went into the market and said, 'We're going to build this market. Before we get talking about all the amazing things youve done in basketball, and just coming off amazing championship. The one thing that's been impressive for me, being a part of the family, is seeing how you all embrace the city. Peter Feigin: And I think, even when we looked at ourselves we're completely diverse, but we weren't anywhere near where we should have been on the leadership side of being a diverse leadership.
